OTE — Optimal Trade Entry

OTE, or optimal trade entry, is the pocket between the 0.618 and 0.79 retracement of the dealing range, measured against the session's bias. It marks a pullback that has gone deep without erasing the move it came from.

How the band is drawn

The two anchors are the high and the low of the dealing range — the structure the overnight session prints between 18:45 and 22:03 ET. Once that window closes the range is fixed, and every level derived from it is fixed with it. The distance between those two prices is the base; 0.618 and 0.79 of it, measured back from the extreme the leg ran to, bound the pocket. Direction comes from the session's bias: under a long bias the retracement runs down from the high, under a short bias up from the low.

On the terminal the pocket is not a separate drawing. It is the gold band inside the range box on THE LEVELS panel, and it cannot exist before the range does. A shift in either anchor carries the band with it. The ratios hold constant; the prices they land on change with every session.

Why the pocket exists

The two numbers are proportions of the range itself, so the band lands in the same relative place on a wide night and a quiet one. The pocket sits deep enough that most of the leg has been given back and shallow enough that the leg still stands. A pullback that goes far without going all the way leaves the extreme it ran to — the far end of the range — as the reference objective, with the width of the range standing between the two.

There is a second, plainer reason the band gets used at all. The pocket lies inside the range, and the extreme the leg ran from sits just past its deep edge, 0.21 of the range beyond it and no further. That closeness gives the read a defined place to be wrong while the objective sits across the range in the other direction. It is a property of the drawing and carries no claim about what follows. The pocket is geometry, and geometry is free; what a trader does inside it is the whole job.

What it does not tell you

The band says nothing about whether price will visit it. Sessions run away from the range without ever trading back into the pocket and the drawing looks the same either way. It says nothing about what happens on arrival. It carries no timing: a pocket touched in the first hour and one touched near the close are the same two prices on the panel. And it does not generate the bias it depends on. Bias is an input, so a bias read the wrong way puts the band on the wrong half of the range while still looking perfectly drawn.

Every price in the band is model-dependent. A different window, different anchors, different ratios or a different bias put the pocket somewhere else. All four are choices the method fixes in advance, which is what keeps the band honest. Two desks working from different anchors will disagree about where the pocket sits and both drawings can be internally correct.

How a desk reads it

Recognition, not prediction. The band marks a place the session's own structure has already drawn, and the reading begins there. A desk looks at what else stands in the same area: the key open stamped at 18:00, the range extremes, what the SPX OPTIONS DESK drawer says about the size of the day the market paid for. Confluence changes nothing about the pocket. It only means the level is not the only thing in the room.

The rest is execution, and execution is where the pocket stops helping. A working desk settles risk, size and the point at which the read is abandoned before the band is reached, because a price that has already arrived is a poor moment to be deciding anything. The geometry is free. It is also finished the instant it is drawn.

How it gets misread

The common error is treating arrival as the event. Price tags 0.618, the trade is taken because the level was reached — but reaching a band is the one thing the geometry can produce on its own. The second error follows the first: when nothing happens in the pocket, the range gets redrawn until some pocket contains the reversal that did happen. That is fitting anchors to an outcome, and it makes every chart look obedient in review.

Where it lives

The pocket only means something beside the structure it is measured from and the levels that share the panel with it.
